The icon of the Archangel Gabriel is preserved by the Orthodox and Catholic churches for the following purposes:

• worship is a prayer, where the icon serves as an object of worship and prayer before the Archangel Gabriel, who is respected as the spiritual patron and intercessor of the believers before God;
• spiritual devotion, where the icon can serve as a direct source of spiritual devotion, expression of faith and worship of God through angelic mediation;
• the beginning and creation, where icons are often used for the beginning of the true and probable creation of biblical and traditional religious scenes, including the image of the Archangel Gabriel;
• protection from evil, believers can see the icon as a protection from evil and demons, since the archangel is respected as an intercessor and protector before God's sovereignty.
