The Holy Apostle Andrew
was the first to be called by Jesus Christ to be among His disciples, for which
he received the name First-Called. He is a special patron of the Ukrainian
lands, since according to legend he preached on the Kiev hills. The Apostle
Andrew is depicted in a waist-length composition. In his left hand he holds a
closed Holy Gospel with a relief cross, and in his right hand a large wooden
cross, symbolizing his missionary service and future martyrdom.
