Musk incense as we know it today is a relatively recent development and comes from mixing ground natural incense with perfume in certain proportions. After kneading, it is left to rest before being shaped by the fathers. In other words, incense loses some of its relative humidity during this time and hardens. At the final stage, they are cut into small pieces and placed in magnesia powder so that they do not stick together.

Musk fragrances have been made by the fathers on Athos for centuries, using mainly flower petals and incense ground in a mortar. The result of mixing is a dark mass, which is placed in containers for drying. Further, small pieces were broken from this hard mass and burned at big holidays and fairs.
