Dear brothers and sisters, this handout is designed to familiarise you with the responsibility you take on as godparents and to provide some advice for you.
Godparents are honoured to be spiritual mentors who, through the Sacrament of Baptism, accept responsibility before God for the spiritual upbringing and piety of their godchild.
Godparents are called godparents among themselves and their own parents. There are usually two godparents (but there can be one), and this couple primarily witnesses the Sacrament itself, and then helps in the catechesis of the person. Usually, godparents are persons chosen by parents to help in the upbringing and spiritual development of the person to be baptised, to offer counselling or, in extreme cases, to take care of the child. Godparents should also be close people in the lives of their spiritual children.
Godparenting is a spiritual mission that also requires assuming a great deal of responsibility for the person on whom the Sacrament of Baptism is performed, and to provide spiritual care for them throughout their lives.
